- Best laid plans and all that. It only took me about 50 miles today to alter my course east. On a whim I left I25 at San Antonio and headed east on US380 towards Roswell. And when I found myself fascinated while crossing the 5,000 year old Malpais Lava Flow I just had to stop for the night at the Valley of Fires Recreation Area. - As you can see last January there was some flow in the Rio Grande River. Now it's almost completely dry, with most of what is flowing diverted into the irrigation canal at the dam. My guess is the dam at the large Elephant Butte Reservoir is closed. I saw a recent picture on the web of the Rio Grande taken upstream near Taos where the river is flowing full tilt. - When I left Percha Dam State Park this morning I had no intention of driving up to the Bosque today. I was headed up to Elephant Butte State Park, with a stop for groceries in Truth or Consequences on the way, to hang out there for a few days to finish my project refining this website before descending on the birds. But was a beautiful day, I missed my turnoff to the park and it was only another hour up the road to the Bosque... Backtracking is a waste of gas, right? - Two issues briefly. One. My new iPad is one slippery beast to handle. None of the many available covers and cases designed to solve that problem please me. I finally came up with a design that works for me a couple weeks back (more on that another time). Two, I still needed a case to serve as a slip case around the house and as a carry case to go wandering off to the coffee shop. I finally worked that issue out yesterday. Rice Toss
After the dinner our hosts conducted us to the beach. Among the presents was a large supply rice for the fleet. It was put up in straw sacks or bales containing about 125 pounds each. By the pile stood a company of athletes or gymnasts chosen from the peasantry for their strength and size and trained for the service and entertainment of the court. At a signal from their leader, who was himself a giant of muscle and fat, a sort of human Jumbo, they began transporting the rice to the boats. It was more frolic than work. Some of thembore a bale on each hand above their heads, some would carry two laid crosswise on the shoulders and head, while others performed dextrous feats of tossing, catching, balancing them, or turning somersaults with them. I saw one nimble Titan fasten his talons in a sack, throw it down on the sand still keeping his hold, turn a somersault over it, throw it over him as he revolved, and come down sitting on the beach with the sack in his lap. Beat that who can. If you imagine it "as easy as preaching," try it the next time in a gymnasium. But let me advise you, first make your will.
