  • Monday, April 27, 2009 - Valley of Fires BLM campground, Carrizozo NM
    • Best laid plans and all that. It only took me about 50 miles today to alter my course east. On a whim I left I25 at San Antonio and headed east on US380 towards Roswell. And when I found myself fascinated while crossing the 5,000 year old Malpais Lava Flow I just had to stop for the night at the Valley of Fires Recreation Area. • Back on December 5th I mentioned New Mexico's plan to close the park system December 23rd and 24th this year as part of an employee furlough program the State put in place to help deal with their budgetary shortfall. It's time to start drifting toward a solution to the problem of where to make my Night Camps those nights so tomorrow I'm going up toValley of Fires Recreation Area in Carrizozo NM. • Friday, December 18, 2009 - Fort Stanton Cave Campground, Lincoln NM
    • Today I planned to head up to Valley of Fires. I never made it. I got waylaid by the jaw-dropping beauty of the rolling desert and grasslands along US 380 between Roswell and Carrizozo NM. I stopped to see what this Eve Ball roadside marker was all about and discovered I could camp right here. Image: Eve Ball roadside marker, Lincoln NM, December 18, 2009.
  • Wednesday, November 9, 2011 - Valley of Fires Recreation Area, Carrizozo NM
    • I've been on the lookout for the perfect stick to make a walking stick for a long long time and this wonderful old hickory flail handle caught my attention amongst the stuff I've been getting rid of. So I brought it along on this winter's journey to see what I could make of it. Image: Hickory walking stick, November 9, 2011.

Growing up... it never stops

I am enjoying finally growing up, but guess what, boys and girls? It NEVER STOPS!!! For the record, there is no point where everything is "solved" and fine and enlightened and fixed in perpetual harmony and light. Oh, for a while, certainly. For years at a time, even. But soon you reach the next divide, hoho, and then it's grow or die a living death. The lucky ones keep struggling and discovering, challenging themselves, no matter how old they are. Don't believe anything else. NONE OF THIS IS LIKE IT SEEMS.
